Architectural Internship should have a focus on preparing an individual
to enter the practice of architecture, well informed of the issues critical
to effective practice and armed with an understanding of the leadership
essential to filling a professional role.
In the process it should provide experience which qualifies for IDP core
competencies credit. And it should help the individual develop the skills
to immediately participate in projects in a way which provides value.
Many internships provide
opportunity to experience significant aspects of project process and delivery
from inception to occupancy, and thus develop skills which enable the
individual to add value in project work. This is certainly important,
and facilitates starting a career. However, few also provide opportunity
to get a comprehensive view of practice, from practice building, strategy,
culture building, ethics, finance, marketing, client discovery, team building,
and community service standpoints. Nor do many internships provide opportunity
to develop and practice leadership skills.
Gaining a broad understanding
of all aspects of practice is key to entering professionals in setting
expectations and making career path decisions. Understanding the need
for leadership and possessing leadership skill is essential to long term
success.
Architecture is about
discovering real needs for clients and society, creating comprehensive
physical solutions, which satisfy multiple sets of values and enhance
enterprise performance and human experience. This can't be done without
a broad perspective and leadership skill. The seeds for gaining that perspective
and skill should start in internship.
