As an intern, one typically goes through the IDP program. This program
is very detailed in separating out the various aspects of architecture
and assuring that every architect has had experience in each of those
areas. Going through the process myself, I have noticed a few things that
might improve the process if included/increased.
One category I would like to see added into the IDP requirements would
be marketing. This is a very valuable tool that is crucial to the success
of a firm. Architects without this tool will always be dependant upon
others to seek and secure jobs. Marketing was not taught or even mentioned
during my education and only by happenstance did I come to work at a firm
where it became one of my primary roles. In just a short time, I was able
to learn an immense amount about how to search, locate, and secure projects.
I learned the importance of
documenting past projects, how to respond to an RFI, and how to prepare
for interviews. I also learned the importance of networking and how to
do it. Although marketing can count for other areas in the IDP requirements,
it alone is not required and one could go through the entire education
and internship process without ever completing a proposal or searching
out a client. I believe this is detrimental to the profession.
The other topic I would like to discuss is social responsibility. As architects,
we have a heavy hand in creating the world around us. This is a huge responsibility
and honor to be able to effect the way that people live, work and recreate.
Social responsibility comes not only in the way we build, but also in
the way we interact in our communities. By volunteering our services,
offering advice to local community groups, joining committees and organizations,
not only are we able to network (going back to the marketing strategies
above), but we also to contribute to our communities in selfless ways
and teach those around us the importance of our profession and responsible
ways to build the world around us. As it stands now, only eighty hours
in three years is expected in the program. I would love to see that increased
and to see more emerging architects get involved in the community while
they are still establishing themselves in their
careers.
IDP is a strong program if followed and implemented as it is intended.
By attending this conference, not only do I hope to expand my own horizons,
but also be able to bring my own experiences to the table I hope to engage
in some powerful discussions, learn from those around me, and perhaps
make a small difference in the training of architects to come.
