An architectural internship should center on responsibility and teamwork
while encompassing design experience related the different stages of practice.
Architecture is rarely a discipline that involves working alone. As taught
early on in the studio, the best design ideas involve collaboration with
peers, a process of allowing ideas to evolve and change to result in the
best outcome. During the period of their internship, the intern should
become a member of the firm, part of the team. They should have the opportunity
to work under experienced architects and provide assistance on current
projects while being responsible for smaller projects and being involved
in the early brainstorming process for upcoming projects. As the next
generation of architects emerges as interns, it is imperative for firms
to be open to young developing ideas in the brainstorming process. To
observe and to learn from experienced professionals is a priority during
the
internship, but it would be a shame for such creative energy to be suppressed.
In addition to the technical and design aspects of architecture, it is
essential that interns understand the importance of marketing and presentation
skills in this profession. In order to obtain projects, a firm must constantly
watch the market for upcoming developments. It is just as important to
be out involved in the community to publicize your work and expertise.
One can build relationships with potential clients as well as fellow consultants.
We are entering a profession that revolves around customer satisfaction
beyond qualification of skills. A well designed project satisfies a clients
needs and desires. An idea is only as good as it sells. In order to maintain
these skills,
interns should be expected and encouraged to consistently present their
work and ideas to improve their communication skills. Much can be learned
from their involvement in the marketing process through presentations
and proposals. It is extremely valuable to know
and understand the client and their criteria.
Most importantly, internship is a time of exploration and discovery of
your future career. Interns should be encouraged to explore the office,
the personnel, and the business. It is extremely helpful if time is allocated
for this purpose. While interns may be finished
with school, the period of internship is a time of some of the most intense
education. It is an opportunity to be submerged in the profession, including
continued education of new products, upcoming projects, new technology,
new codes, and new processes. For
example, the rise in LEED Accredited projects opens the opportunity for
interns to pursue certification early in their career and gain a priceless
asset to their portfolio. An architectural office is a resource itself
with endless information on building codes, construction documents, marketing
techniques, case studies, product books, etc. The basis of an internship
remains centered on education, through readings, production, and observation.
Through an internship that incorporates responsibility, teamwork, exploration,
observation, and practice, an intern will be more than adequately prepared
for a career in architecture.
